St David’s Day Beard of Wales
St David’s Day Beard of Wales
The Beard Liberation Front (BLF), the informal network of beard wearers, has said that with the annual Beard of Wales poll concluding on Thursday the result was a close shave. Adrian Masters ITV Wales political journalist was beaten by Grant Tucker of the Sunday Times.
BLF Organiser Keith Flett said “…it really was a close shave with the lead changing hands in the final hours of the poll. Grant Tucker has our congratulations but he had a very worthy opponent in Adrian Masters. His beard may yet be a winner”
According to the BLF, Grant Tucker received 48% of the poll. Adrian Masters was a close second and the Labour Assembly member Huw Irranca-Davies came in third place.
A New Record for the BLF
Over 2,000 people voted in the poll, which was a new record for the St David’s Day Beard of Wales annual poll.
The poll aims to determine the St David’s Day Beard of Wales, the Welsh beard that offers the most positive national image.
Previous poll winners include Adam Jones, Welsh rugby prop who won the Award in 2013 beating former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams. Leigh Halfpenny won in 2014. Musician Chris Fox in 2015, Joe Ledley, footballer 2016. 2017 went to Charcutier Illtud Llyr Dunsford with Chris Fox winning again in 2018.
It is the 7th time the Award has been given following the traditional UK Beard of the Year at the end of December each year. The BLF says “it is a mark of Wales as a modern nation on St David’s Day that beards are now playing an increasingly significant role in national life.”
Congratulations to Grant, Stay bearded!
Happy St David’s Day to all our bearded brothers in Wales and around the globe!
